What Should I Wear For My Horse Photoshoot?

One of the most common questions I'm asked is, "What should I wear for my horse photoshoot?"
The good news is there are no strict rules! The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident. When you feel good, it always shows in your photographs.
That said, there are a few things that photograph particularly beautifully and help create those timeless, natural images we all love.

Soft, Neutral Colours Always Work
You can't go wrong choosing colours inspired by nature. Soft creams, beiges, sage greens, dusty pinks, terracotta tones and muted blues always photograph beautifully and complement both horses and outdoor locations.
These colours allow the focus to remain on you and your horse while creating a soft, elegant feel to your images.
Don't Be Afraid Of A Pop Of Colour
Whilst soft, neutral tones are always a safe choice, that doesn't mean you have to avoid colour altogether.
A bold dress or statement piece can look absolutely stunning, especially when paired thoughtfully with your horse and the location. Rich burgundy, deep emerald green, mustard, rust, navy and even black can photograph beautifully and add impact to your images.
The key is choosing colours that complement the surroundings rather than overpower them. A beautiful pop of colour can help you stand out against lavender fields, woodland backdrops and golden summer grasses, creating images that feel both striking and timeless.
Try to avoid bright neon colours, large logos or busy patterns, as these can be distracting and may date more quickly over time.

Dresses Photograph Beautifully
Flowing dresses are always a favourite of mine, especially during golden hour when the light is soft and dreamy.
Long dresses add movement and elegance to images and work beautifully in wildflower meadows, woodland settings and beach locations.
That doesn't mean you have to wear a dress though! If dresses aren't your thing, jeans, boots and a beautiful blouse or knit jumper can look equally stunning and often feel more "you".

Consider Your Horse's Colour
Different colours can complement different horses.
For example:
Creams, sage greens and dusty pinks work beautifully with grey horses.
Terracotta, rust and warm neutrals pair wonderfully with bays and chestnuts.
Soft blues and creams can look stunning against darker horses.
If you're unsure, I'm always happy to help you choose outfits before your shoot.
The Finishing Touches
Accessories can make a huge difference and help bring an outfit together.
Wide-brimmed hats, delicate jewellery, scarves, flower crowns and layered textures can all add extra interest and personality to your images without distracting from the connection between you and your horse.
For equestrian-inspired sessions, I often love seeing classic country styling such as felt hats, long coats, knitted jumpers and beautiful boots. For a more boho feel, flowing fabrics, statement hats and layered jewellery can work wonderfully.
The best accessories are the ones that feel natural to you and reflect your personality. The goal is always to enhance the image, not overwhelm it.

The Most Important Thing
The perfect outfit isn't the most expensive dress or the trendiest boots.
The perfect outfit is the one that makes you feel comfortable, confident and like yourself.
Your horse doesn't care what you're wearing, and neither do I. My job is to capture the connection between you both and create images you'll treasure for years to come.
If you're ever unsure what to wear, feel free to send me photos of a few outfit options before your session. I'm always happy to help and offer advice.
